Recommended Routes

Route 1: Via Chakrata (Shorter)

Dehradun → Kalsi → Chakrata → Tiuni

The more direct route from Dehradun. At Kalsi, stop to see the Ashoka Rock Edict — a 3rd century BCE inscription by Emperor Ashoka, one of the oldest historical inscriptions in India, carved into a boulder by the river. The road then climbs to Chakrata before descending into the Tons valley towards Tiuni. Well-paved throughout, with beautiful views of the terraced hillsides and the river below.

Route 2: Via Mussoorie-Purola (Scenic)

Dehradun → Mussoorie → Nainbagh → Purola → Mori → Tiuni

The longer but more scenic option. This route takes you through Mussoorie, then via Nainbagh and Purola town into the heart of the Tons valley. You'll pass through Mori's alpine forests on the way — consider stopping to see the tallest pine and the forest. Best for those who want to combine the drive with sightseeing. The landscape grows wilder as you go deeper into the valley.

Route 3: Via Menus (Alternate Scenic)

Dehradun → Vikasnagar → Kalsi → Menus → Tiuni

An excellent alternative to the Chakrata route. Instead of climbing high into the mountains, this route stays lower and follows the river valleys. You'll pass through Vikasnagarand historic Kalsi, before taking the road towards Menus. The latter half of the drive closely hugs the Tons river, offering continuous waterside views all the way to Hotel Fatehpuri. The road is generally well-maintained and experiences less elevation-related weather disruption than Chakrata.

Route 4: Via Himachal / Rohru (Adventure)

Shimla → Rohru → Hatkoti → Tiuni (following the Pabbar River)

The road less travelled — and honest warning: the road quality is average to rough in parts. But the reward is the Pabbar River valley: apple orchards, trout streams, the ancient Hatkoti Shiva temple, and the dense Kanesar Forest. This route follows the Pabbar River from Himachal into Uttarakhand, entering Tiuni from the west. Best for travellers coming from Himachal, motorcycle tourers, and adventure seekers who don't mind a few bad patches of road for a lot of beauty.
